TOOL

Aroma Wheel Generator (beta)i To generate an aroma wheel, simply upload a Word document or paste your text into the provided window. The sensory mapping is at the core of this tool and represents the bulk of the work: each aroma descriptor is linked to a broader impression category. As this is the free version, the mapping is purposefully simplified. The generator works particularly well for summarising bulk tastings of the same product or the same category.

Aroma wheels and word clouds may appear simple, and sometimes even reductive. Used well, however, they are practical tools for building a shared sensory language. They help organise tasting notes, reveal recurring descriptors, and make unfamiliar spirit categories easier to approach.

I use them extensively in the Spirits Guidelines, as well as in public speaking and training contexts. Their purpose is not to replace tasting, judgement, or cultural understanding, but to lower the barrier of entry, demystify categories, and give tasters a clearer vocabulary for discussing what they perceive.
